CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter Name: Peter Simon Halloran
Age: 39
World Information: Peter comes from a world that is functionally the same as the one we live in, Except Demons Are There Sometimes. Society is the same, the world turns in the exact same ways, Except Demons Are There Sometimes.
In some other dimension, creatures of chaos exist, and they occasionally push forward into the plane of existence where everything physical lives. Cases of possessions and hauntings stem from this: though rarely are these creatures able to manifest for very long or do very much in the way of the evil they aim for. Incidents are infrequent enough that they’re brushed aside as superstition or explained away with scientific fact. Just like real life: But Demons.
Character Information: Here!Personality: Peter is a man motivated largely by fear. He is afraid of being abandoned, afraid of being inadequate, and, above all, afraid of other people being hurt under his watch. While none are exactly irrational—at least, given his history—they’re fears that he’s allowed to fester and grow into obsessions that dominate the rest of his life. Instead of spending most of his time pursuing things that he enjoys, like any healthy person, Peter is stuck in the shadow of his anxieties, never quite able to keep ahead of them. Even when he’s not actively in any kind of danger, he gives off the impression that he’s constantly on vigil for anything that could hurt him, whether it’s a physical threat or just an intimation that someone doesn’t like him very much. He would describe it as being careful and cognizant, but it typically falls more in the line of paranoia.
Peter ascribes a great deal of significance to his own life, believing that God (or the Universe, depending on his feelings that day) is out to get him personally, and maybe everybody else he knows, too. Because of this, he feels uniquely hostile to any kind of authority, but especially ideas of religion and power. He places himself and his life at the center of situations, certain that everything that happens to him happens for a reason, and usually a nefarious one. Peter is self-centered, but also incredibly self-conscious, and goes to great pains to make sure that he’s likeable and attractive (to mixed success). His vanity ensures that people don’t tolerate him for very long, despite him being desperate for connection. He’s overbearingly sentimental, and often clings hard to any person who shows him positive attention, certain that his luck has finally turned around.
He is a teacher at heart (and also in real life), making him prone to lecture at length about things he may or may not know about—though he
does often know, thanks to his persistent striding for knowledge. He’s a well-taught intellectual who uses knowledge as a shield against the world, convinced that simply by knowing enough he can protect himself from the worst it has to offer. Even after this is proven untrue (all of his learning being useless against the demon that killed his father), he still desperately tries to prove his usefulness as a source of information. He’s exceedingly talkative but also very polite in conversation, hating to be rude but also often leaning towards condescending, especially towards anyone younger than him. It’s thoroughly benign: he just genuinely thinks he’s doing people a favor by making it clear how much smarter and holier he is than them.
He possesses a great deal of care for other people, though, even when it’s to his own detriment. For all of his self-aggrandizing solipsism, he wants the best for just about everyone he meets, and wants to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. While always conscious of his own mortality and health, he’ll tend to put others first, as in the case of Esther, who he (literally) went to great pains to protect. He feels an obligation to help anyone he possibly can to make up for his past shortcomings. Part of it is just another facet of his savior-complex better-than-the-rest Problem, but he’s also just genuinely a caring, nurturing person at heart.
While prone to self-destructive habits and thought patterns in his day-to-day life, Peter ultimately clings to life very, very hard. He isn't interested in giving up his chance at life so easily when it comes down to it: he wants to survive no matter how difficult it gets, and how unhappy life might actually be. He's willing to go to great lengths to maintain normalcy where he can find it.
